Caricature of Michael by Roger Chapman
Michael Dunne’s photography career – spanning an impressive 55 years - has taken him from the best studios in fifties London, to the glamorous fashion scene of sixties in London, New York, Paris and Rome and into the stylish world of interior design photography in the seventies, at the same time working with fashion, advertising and always portraiture. His list of mentors and colleagues reads like a who’s who in photography, with Baron, Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn just a few of the names that he was associated with.
After apprenticing with Baron and Cecil Beaton, he was commissioned by The Royal Opera House to photograph Operas and The Royal Ballet in 1950’s London.
Michael then moved into the glamorous fashion world, working with The London Evening News, The Times, Queen and Tatler, just some of the titles for which he created fashion spreads, travelling all over Europe to immortalise the hottest models and designers of the day. In Paris he was recruited by the original ELLE magazine, who sent him to New York in 1959 where he was snapped up by the fashion editor of Harpers Bazaar. From then on he spent time between London and New York, demand for Michael’s services had soared and he worked non-stop creating features and campaigns for global fashion magazines and advertising agencies.
With the encouragement of Mary Gilliat of The Times and Erica Brown of the New York Times in 1975, Michael moved into architectural and interior design photography, developing a new way of lighting interiors. Magazines including H&G, London, New York, Milan and Paris published his work, and he illustrated many books on design.
Michael’s retirement has taken him to the charming North Yorkshire town of Masham, where he organises photography workshops in the Yorkshire Dales, Tuscany, Italy and the Correze region of France. He is passionate about sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with upcoming photographers of all ages, both amateur and professional.
Michael’s other passion is the ‘Music in Masham Trust’, which produces classical concerts and recitals by up and coming young musicians in St Mary’s Church and the Town Hall, Masham.
