Late August, the air is heavy, hot and sultry; no wind. The distant Welsh hills appear close, detail apparent on their flanks as rays of sunlight gleam through gaps in the clouds. It is almost high tide, the water flat calm, as though ironed by the weight of the warm air, no ripples or waves at the water’s edge to disturb the quiet of the day, the rising tide spilling silently over the sand. Restless gulls circle quietly over the land, disturbed by the oppressive heat.
