ancient atlantic oakwoodland
these are ancient woodlands of small gnarled trees rich with bryophytes. Confined to the western coasts of the UK they are found in Devon, Wales, Cumbria and Scotland. Where hazel dominates the oaks often emerge above the canopy and have straighter trunks than illustrated here
